Xero vs FreeAgent vs QuickBooks vs Sage: which accounting software is right for you?

Four different platforms, four different strengths. Here's a plain-English rundown of who each one suits, roughly what it costs, and what stands out — so you can make a sensible choice, not just the popular one.

Before you choose

They all do the basics well

Invoicing, bank feeds, VAT returns, expense tracking — every platform below covers the fundamentals of Making Tax Digital-compliant bookkeeping. The differences that actually matter are who each one is built for, how the pricing scales as you grow, and which extras you'll actually use. Note that software providers change their pricing and plans regularly, so treat the figures below as a general guide and check the provider's own site for exact current pricing before you commit.

Where Buzz fits in

We're not tied to pushing just one platform

Buzz is a Xero Gold Partner, and every Buzz package comes with FreeAgent included free as standard, saving you up to £330 a year on software you'd otherwise pay for separately. Between the two, most sole traders, freelancers, landlords and small businesses are properly covered.

But we're not precious about it. If you're already set up and settled on QuickBooks or Sage, or there's a genuine reason one of those suits your business better, we can work with that too. The right question is always "what actually suits your business" — not "what do we happen to sell."

  • Xero setup, migration and ongoing support from a Gold Partner
  • FreeAgent included free in every Buzz package
  • Happy to work with QuickBooks or Sage if that's what fits
  • An honest recommendation based on your business, not our preference
